All Hallows Eve

October 31, 1991 – Hogwarts

He gazed, transfixed, into the Mirror of Erised. Of all the revelations during Harry's first weeks at Hogwarts this was the most profound: his parents had been Wizards, well-loved, smart, and beautiful. Yet they were just as dead as all the times Dudley taunted him. It was baffling. He tried to feel through his confusion. They smiled at him from the hazy mirror, and he wished he could step inside and be enfolded in their arms.

Although it wasn’t cold in the fogbound cemetery, Harry shivered. He approached Snape’s headstone with a sense of dread, feeling silly for being afraid. As he stepped onto the grave, a tendril of cold mist crept up his pantleg.

The sensation curled around his thigh. He felt a presence behind him, and a breath gusted in his ear: "Hhhharrrry..." It was a salacious, resonant whisper.

He jumped, dropping the blood-red roses, piercing his finger in the process. He spun around, and saw... no one. With a nervous laugh, he said aloud "what’s with me, anyway? I’m not afraid of ghosts."

“Dammit Severus, how could you!” Harry stormed in, slamming the door. He threw the Daily Prophet down with a thwack, and paced the kitchen, fuming.

“You knew this would happen! Why didn’t you defend yourself?” Severus set his jaw and glared, not offering any explanation.

Harry stopped, stared into his eyes. A moment passed, slowly. Severus reached out to touch him. Harry slapped his hand away, furious. He opens his mouth, jaw trembling, not finding words.

Severus grabbed him and hauled him in close. Harry melted, sobbing against his chest. “Hush, my brat. We’ve had enough war for this lifetime.”

Landing with a hard thud, Severus located his wand, brushed snow from his robes, and peered around. An eerie blue glow was the only light on this overcast and moonless night. Where the hell am I?

The frozen river was clear and strong. Arched windows beckoned him. As if enchanted, he moved toward the watery light. Stepping inside the crystalline structure he looked up. Columns rose, fluted in shades of clear and pale, to meet in graceful arches high above. A chandelier of icicles twinkled.

What is this place? His wonder expanded into the cool air like his frosty breath.
